Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water Make sure the water is warm but not hot for yeast activation.
  • 1/4 cup milk Warm before adding.
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preparation

  • In a bowl, mix warm water and yeast, and let sit for 5 minutes.
  • In a separate bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add the yeast mixture, warm milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients.
  • Mix until a dough forms. Knead for about 10 minutes until the dough is soft.
  • Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  • After rising, punch down the dough and divide it into small pieces.
  • Shape each piece into a bun and place them in a steamer basket lined with parchment paper.
  • Steam the buns for about 15-20 minutes.
  • Let them cool slightly before serving.

Notes

These buns are best served warm. You can enjoy them plain or with powdered sugar, and they pair well with tea or hot chocolate. To store, let them cool completely, then place in an airtight container for up to 2 days, or freeze for up to 2 months.
