  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled Ensure butter is cool to avoid cooking the eggs.
  • 2 cups milk, lukewarm Milk should be lukewarm for better mixing.
  • 1 1/4 cups powdered sugar Used for mixing with egg yolks.
  • 4 large eggs, separated Whip whites until stiff peaks form.
  • 1 tablespoon water Mixed into the egg yolk and sugar mixture.
  • 1 cup flour Gently fold into the batter.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract Use fresh extract for best flavor.
  • to taste Powdered sugar for dusting For garnishing before serving.

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C). Lightly grease an 8x8 inch baking dish and set it aside.
  • Separate the eggs, placing the whites in a clean, dry bowl. Whip the egg whites until stiff peaks form and set aside.
  • In a separate bowl, beat the egg yolks and powdered sugar until pale yellow and fluffy.
  • Mix in the melted butter and water for about 2 minutes.
  • Gently mix in the flour until evenly incorporated.
  • Slowly beat in the lukewarm milk and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth.
  • Gently fold in the whipped egg whites, one-third at a time.

Baking

  • Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and bake for 40-60 minutes, or until the cake is barely jiggly in the center.
  • Cool the cake completely before dusting with powdered sugar.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 3-4 days. Serve warm or at room temperature, plain or with toppings.
