Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup short-grain rice (risotto or pudding rice) Use for the best creamy texture.
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter For the mixture.

Serving Toppings

  • Butter, Cinnamon, Sugar, Raisins For serving; let each person customize their bowl.

Instructions

Cooking

  • In a heavy saucepan, combine the rice and milk. Bring this mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring often to prevent the rice from sticking.
  • Once it boils, reduce the heat to low, cover it, and simmer for 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally until the rice is tender and the mixture has thickened.
  • Stir in the heavy cream and salt. Cook uncovered for another 5–10 minutes until it becomes creamy.
  • Remove from heat and swirl in the butter until it melts and combines well.

Serving

  • Serve hot in bowls and let everyone add their favorite toppings like butter, cinnamon, sugar, or raisins.

Notes

If you have leftovers, let Rommegrot cool to room temperature, then place it in an airtight container in the fridge. It can last for about 3 to 4 days. To reheat, warm gently on the stove or in the microwave, adding a splash of milk if it becomes too thick. For variations, consider adding vanilla extract or serving with fruits like berries.
