Ingredients
  

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups masa harina corn flour
  • 1.5 cups warm water
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Filling Ingredients

  • 1 cup shredded cheese (quesillo/oaxaca, mozzarella, or white cheddar) Choose your preferred cheese.
  • to taste Vegetable oil For cooking.
  • Curtido (Pickled Cabbage Slaw) Serve as a side.
  • Optional fillings: Refried beans, cooked and seasoned ground meat (pork, beef, or chicken) Customize with your favorite fillings.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a bowl, mix the masa harina, warm water, and salt until a smooth dough forms.
  • Divide the dough into equal portions and flatten each portion into a disc.
  • Place a spoonful of your chosen filling (cheese, beans, or meat) in the center of a disc, then fold the edges over to enclose the filling.
  • Flatten the stuffed dough gently to form a thick cake.

Cooking

  • Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Cook each pupusa for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.

Serving

  • Serve hot with curtido on the side.
  • Add hot sauce for extra flavor, if desired.

Notes

Make sure the dough is smooth and not too dry. If it feels dry, add a little more water. Use a non-stick skillet or add plenty of oil to prevent sticking. Experiment with different fillings to find your favorite combination!
