Ingredients

Onion and Coating Ingredients

  • 2 large large onions Yellow or red onions work well.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs Can use panko for extra crunch.
  • 2 large eggs Whisked.
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil for frying Ensure oil is hot enough for frying.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Slice the onions into rings and separate them.
  • In a bowl, combine flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • In another bowl, whisk the eggs and mix in the buttermilk.

Coating

  • Dip each onion ring first in the flour mixture, then in the egg mixture, and finally coat with breadcrumbs.

Cooking

  • Heat oil in a deep fryer or a large pot.
  • Fry the onion rings in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Drain on paper towels and serve hot.

Notes

For a thicker coating, repeat the dipping process in the flour, egg, and breadcrumbs. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven to regain crispiness. Add shredded cheese or experiment with spices for variations.
