Ingredients
  

For the bars

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cold and cubed) For flaky texture
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)

For the cream cheese frosting

  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking pan.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Pour in the buttermilk and vanilla extract. Stir until just combined.
  • In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and ground cinnamon.
  • Spread half of the batter into the prepared baking pan. Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over it, then dollop and spread the remaining batter on top.

Baking

  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

Frosting

  • While the bars bake, beat together the softened cream cheese, softened butter, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Once the bars are baked and cooled, spread the cream cheese frosting over the top.

Notes

These bars can be served warm or at room temperature. For an extra kick of flavor, consider adding chopped nuts or raisins to the cinnamon filling.
